An Evening of Surprises

I have some amazing people in my life.

For those that don't know, today is my 5 year anniversary of when I was told my diagnosis.  This week we celebrate 13 years of marriage.  Our first date after kids was 3 years ago, so you can tell we don't do this often.

Last week Max told me to get a new dress.  Ok.  Simple enough.  Then he told me the kids were going to the Feliciano's and we were going out on Saturday night.  My eyes got huge, heart skipped 7 beats, and I'm sure I squealed with excitement.  What?  Like on a date?  What kind of dress?  Where are we going?  He wouldn't say.  Nope.  He told me he was going to wear a suit and tie.  For those of you that know him...you could only imagine my response.  It went something like "HA! Wait.  You're not kidding?"   Later in the week I found out that we needed to pack an overnight bag.  Uh, hello?  Abbi doesn't sleep through the night.  I know this very well because I have the boob she wants at 3am!  Thankfully our friends had the 'it's only one night' attitude and willingly kept all 3 of them.

I was so excited.

We got dressed and dropped the kiddos off with Amber and Romy.  Max put the location in his phone and said it's about 45 min away.  Well, the beach is about that so I assumed that was where we were headed.  About a mile down the road it said "Smithfield".  Hmmmm.  Ok.

We pull in to the Smithfield Inn and checked in.  Our reservations were about a half an hour later so we took a little walk down Main St. to enjoy the warm sun and decided to sit on the porch.  As we sat, up pulls Pastor Arnold and his wife Laurie.  Max calls out "Hey!  What are you doing here?  Are you here to eat too?"  It wasn't until the second of 5 couples showed that I realized this was a set up.  None of the ladies had a clue what they planned...together.  We get seated had 2 red roses and candles light in front of us.  It was beautiful.  After ordering wine and appetizers, the men called a meeting on the veranda.  Shortly later, they return.  After the meal the called another chat on the veranda.  It was almost like how women go to the restroom...in groups.  Well, they peaked through the window wearing red mustaches and hats and walked around to come back in...serenading us barbershop quintet style.  Three songs, many pictures, videos, laughs, and tears after a profession of their love to us later...

We stayed at the Bed & Breakfast, had breakfast with Pastor Arnold and Laurie, then went to church to find out if Amber and Romy were still our friends after last night.

They are.

Max and I are so thankful for the people here we call family.

I'm thankful for this wonderful man of God that I am privileged to call my husband.
